There are many employers indicating that our students are not career ready. This is an issue for the American educational system and we as teachers, in our own way help can correct this problem of student career preparation. Using the skills of critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication embedded within our lessons would help. Believe it or not, embedding these elements is not as difficult as you would think.
Educational technology is getting better
Technology is getting better for educators. And, FREE technology is awesome. There are platforms for you to extend your classroom lessons beyond the class period which incorporates those elements. Often educators are in a dilemma of deciding which platform to use, when to use it and where does it fit into your lesson. The quality of the options are easier for teachers to differentiate their lessons. For example if you have a student that learns better auditory than reading, there are several platforms for you to record the content, upload to a webpage or podcast and give the student the link.
It’s easier to individualize lessons
Blogging, videos and webinars are making it so easy for teachers to individualize lessons for students without it being so difficult for the teacher. This is helping the students learn in their own comfort zone content that would otherwise be difficult to grasp and available if the student wants to revisit. Allowing students to be creative in their own learning and taking ownership embeds the critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication needed to make our students better equip for the skills the new careers will require.
