Hi all! Well, last week, I reviewed The Fat Boy Chronicles and this week, I had the pleasure of taking a look at Maria Dismondy’s super cute book Pink Tiara Cookies for Three in honor of her Pink Tiara Book Tour! It is so cute and believe it or not, it talks about some of the same issues that the other book did, but on a much more toned-down level for younger students. Maria was also a co-author of The Juice Box Bully book, which I know many of the readers are familiar with!
Basically the plot of the story is that Sami and Stella are best friends, until Jasmine moves in. Of course, Sami does not like the new girl moving in on her best friend and feels threatened. The three girls have to find a way to work through their situation to resolve the hurt feelings and grudges if they want to all enjoy some pink tiara cookies together.
It really is a nice subtle way to address bullying, in its various forms, to the younger set. In particular, I like how the characters are girls, rather than a stereotypical “boy” bully. After reading aloud to the class, I would probably have a discussion about what bullying means to each of us. Maybe even do a journal prompt to hear from the students in their own words. Lastly, I would bring the group back together and do some sort of teambuilding exercise. One I like to do is pass the ball. All students sit in a circle and the teacher starts with the ball. She rolls it to one student and says something nice about them. Then that student rolls it to another and gives a compliment as well. The activity continues until all students have had a compliment. It is a nice way to remind students that they are a team and should build one another up, rather than tearing each other down.
Well, in the spirit of being kind, Maria Dismondy has agreed to chat with me on my “Chatting with Charity” radio show on Sunday, January 29th at 8 pm ET! PLUS, she is giving away an autographed copy of the book and a tiara cookie cutter to one lucky reader of The Organized Classroom Blog! How perfect would that be for your class to have a snack after discussing the book? LOVE IT!
To get entered, please just fill out the form below and remember to head to my radio page to set yourself a reminder so that you can hear from the author herself! Also make sure to check out her Pink Tiara blog Tour for other places to enter to win a copy as well!
Good luck from Maria Dismondy and The Organized Classroom Blog!
