Last month we covered the clean-out process. Today we’ll start putting those supplies away Common-Core style.
We begin with our non-paper supplies…those hands-on items that support student learning in a variety of curriculum areas.
Having supplies organized and at the ready is a timesaver that lessens prep and stress. It also makes it super easy for students to quickly get their hands on the right resource if they are given access.
Let’s start with math supplies. You’ll quickly see how the organizational concepts can be applied to all curriculum areas.

Math Supplies by Domain
As you can see, I have labeled the drawers of my plastic storage cabinet with the math domains that I teach in 4th grade. I love having all of my math manipulatives organized in one place.
When lesson planning, I donít have to prep my materials if I keep them neat, tidy and organized. These drawers become a grab-and-go-teach cabinet.
Inside the drawers, centers or games should be labeled by standard with a note card in the storage bag listing the standard(s) with instructions.
When lesson planning, you’ll be able to quickly see what you have on hand and what you may need to acquire.
Another bonus: If any classroom visitors want to know how that fun math game meets Common Core standards, you’ll be able to tell them – specifically – what you are working on and why.
Beyond Math: Organizing ELA and Science Items
This system makes intuitive sense for math, but don’t rule it out for other areas, even if there are no current CCSS (like science):
- Organize science items by unit
- Separate language and spelling items from reading and writing
