I remember when I was a child and my Mom took me school shopping the week before school started. There was never anything quite like picking out a new bookbag, lunchbox, and school clothes (which we were strictly instructed were not to be used until school started).
I don’t even need to explain the awesomeness of a new box of unused crayons. All sitting gorgeously in the most beautiful color coordinated pattern with all that new crayon smell wafting out of the box.
My new Trapper Keeper with the cat and rainbows on it was glorious and I couldn’t wait until I could properly tuck it under my arm, filled with some loose leaf paper and a plastic zipper pouch filled with pop pencils and erasable pens.
Perhaps I am dating myself a bit much there, but even as an adult, I still LOVE going school shopping. With or without my own kids.
While some items are still the same (that beautiful yellow and green crayon box remains a wonderful constant) and some are different (I am positive I never required headphone or earbuds when I was in school), going school supply shopping never gets old.
I think perhaps it’s the feeling of cooler and cozy temperatures, shiny new supplies, and the promise of an exciting fresh start. For me, I feel more excited at the beginning of a new school year than I do at the beginning of a new calendar year.
So what are some of the best items for teachers (and students) this year? Let’s take a look.
I was super excited when I heard about Meijer’s special offer just for teachers! Check it out:
Meijer is offering a 15% discount on any school or home office purchase to all teachers. The offer applies to all Meijer stores for the entire back to school season July 9-September 30, 2019.
So not only can I grab all the things below, but I can also get them at a 15% off discount too? As many times as I want throughout the promotional period?!
Simply show your current school ID at your local Meijer Customer Service Desk within the time frame and they will hook you up with your savings coupon. There are some restrictions and it can only be used in store.
I grabbed my 5th grader and we headed over to our local Meijer to check out all the choices. So much BTS goodness…
I mean seriously – who can resist all these colorful choices!
Look at those jumbo crayons! Obviously a bit large for my mister, but perfect for small hands.
Jumbo glue sticks? Yes please! I can see these getting lost under the cabinets less than the small ones, not to mention lasting a lot longer.
WOW! An entire double aisle of backpacks. Little man was in awe and couldn’t even decide which he wanted because there were so many choices. Not to mention, some awesome name brands that will definitely hold up throughout the school year.
Forget the normal teacher canvas bag. I’m thinking a backpack would hold up better anyway.
An entire rack of gorgeous new planners!
This one was my favorite. It was adorable and perfect for my tastes (literally – haha).
Speaking of calendars, one of my must-haves is a desk calendar. I write down any important last minute events, meetings, or dates I need to remember.
Anyone else wish they had stock in the sticky note companies? I use them for everything! You can even use your printer to print motivational notes to your students or your own kids. I have a tutorial for printing on sticky notes here.
I know the cute memo boards have been a popular item recently and this one is glitter-fied! I must have it.
He was loving all the folder choices. We also picked up the required notecards, composition books, and a few packs of loose leaf (can you ever really have enough loose leaf paper?).
Another item teachers never have enough: dry erase markers. Doesn’t matter whether you start with 100 or 1,000 markers. Students will find a way to dry them out quicker than the Sahara Desert. Look at all the pretty color and tip options.
Just for fun: blinged out scissors for the teacher desk.
Anything that makes a teacher smile is a great desk accessory in my opinion. We all need a little extra sometimes.
And a giant eraser – how fun is this? Another item that would be great to put in student group supply baskets for each team to share. It is quite large, won’t get lost under a desk easily, and is a solution for the age old “I don’t have an eraser on my pencil” problem.
This is a given these days…
I spied this really cool peel and stick wall accessories! The calendars are nice, but I was really drawn to the maps honestly.
Putting up a map somewhere in the room is a wonderful way to document all the places you’ve mentioned throughout the year. Grab a dry erase marker and make sure to circle all the places in the world that get mentioned in your read aloud stories, or in social studies, or even where students may have vacationed over break.
Another item I have extras of always somewhere in the cabinets or drawers. I color code my subjects and have students grab their “red math folder” or “blue homework folder” and know in an instant whether they have the correct materials to get started.
Last, but not least, let’s keep it all organized in these super cute drawer bins. I love the modern farmhouse look of this style!
So many choices and I didn’t even show you everything we picked up for our school supply lists!
What else are your favorite school supplies from your childhood – or even now? I would love to hear in a comment below!
